Our Mission

The Asmara Bellydance Initiative uplifts BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) dancers and honors the cultural roots of Raqs Sharqi (often referred to as “belly dance” in the West) by celebrating diversity, promoting equity, and fostering community through performances, education, and events.
We inspire self-expression, support creative growth, and cultivate an inclusive, empowering space for all. Our mission is rooted in cultural integrity, equity, and a deep commitment to the art and history of Raqs Sharqi.

Our Values & Principles

  • Cultural Integrity – Honoring the origins of Raqs Sharqi with depth, respect, and authenticity.
  • Equity & Representation – Centering BIPOC dancers in spaces where they have historically been marginalized.
  • Community & Collaboration – Creating opportunities for connection, mentorship, and collective growth.
  • Empowerment through Education – Providing knowledge and resources to deepen understanding and refine artistic expression.
  • Creative Exploration – Encouraging innovation while staying mindful of cultural roots.

Our Vision for the Future

We envision a world where BIPOC dancers have equitable opportunities, visibility, and recognition in the Raqs Sharqi community. We strive to preserve and respect the history and cultural significance of this art form while fostering lifelong learning, growth, and empowerment.
